CEMENTED GRANULAR MATERIALS : a Micro Mechanical Study
Cemented Granular Materials (CGMs) are all the materials constituted by a granular skeleton and cement partially filling the interstitial space.
In this definition fall a number of very common naturally occurring and artificially produced materials, such as sandstones, asphalts and grouted soils.
Despite thier widespread diffusion they are only partially understood geomaterials, and the current models are not able to rationally connect how the properties of the components of CGMs (such as the amount and kind of cement)
influence the overall behavior, nor to describe the evolution of the micro structure.

In my research I want to better understand the inelastic phenomena occurring at the microscopic (grain) scale and how they influence the overall response.
To do so I am developing constitutive models, based on breakage mechanics theory (Einav, 2007) that inject into a thermodynamic framework the understanding of the underlying physics.
To gather experimental quantitative informations at the micro (grain) scale I am using an X-Ray computed tomography, a non invasive
4D (3D+time) imaging technique that allows to follow the evolution of the micro-structure while performing classic mechanical tests.
To complete the picture with insights about the evolution of the local stresses I’m using the MPM methood, an enhanced derivation of the Finite Element Model (FEM) with moving integration points.

A better understanding of CGMs will underpin the capability to predict and model their behavior, with tangible advantages for several fundamental geotechnical applications such as sand production in oil extraction, offshore platform foundations, soil grouting.
